IELTS Listening: Multiple Speakers Section

The Multi-Speaker Challenge

In IELTS Listening Sections 3 and 4, you often hear 2-4 speakers discussing a topic. This is challenging because:

  • Speakers interrupt each other

  • They change opinions

  • They use similar vocabulary

  • They talk faster than in Sections 1 and 2
  • Here's how to follow multiple speakers and catch every answer.

Step 1: Identify Speakers in the First 30 Seconds

Before the audio starts, look at the questions. If they mention names like "the tutor," "Student A," or "Sarah," note them.

    When the audio plays:

  • Listen for the FIRST speaker introduction

  • Note each speaker's voice (male/female, accent, tone)

  • Write initials next to each question
  • Example:

  • "Good morning, everyone. I'm Professor Smith" β†’ Male, older, authoritative

  • "Hi, I'm Sarah" β†’ Female, student

  • "And I'm James" β†’ Male, student
  • Now when you hear a male voice, you know it's either Professor Smith or James.

Step 2: Track Who Says What

    Key phrases to listen for:

    Agreement:

  • "I agree with..."

  • "That's exactly what I think"

  • "You're right about..."
  • Disagreement:

  • "I'm not sure about that"

  • "Actually, I disagree"

  • "But what about..."

  • "I see your point, but..."
  • Changing opinion:

  • "On second thought..."

  • "Now that you mention it..."

  • "I hadn't considered that"
  • Giving examples:

  • "For instance..."

  • "Like when we..."

  • "Such as..."
  • Step 3: Follow the Discussion Flow

Most Section 3 discussions follow this pattern:

  • Topic introduction (tutor sets the context)

  • Students share initial ideas

  • Discussion/debate

  • Tutor's feedback or conclusion
  • Listen for transitions:

  • "Moving on to..." (new topic)

  • "Before we continue..." (pause for clarification)

  • "So, to summarize..." (wrapping up)
  • Step 4: Use the Questions to Guide You

The questions are your roadmap. Read them before the audio and during pauses.

    Question types in multi-speaker sections:

  • "What does the tutor think about...?" β†’ Listen for the tutor's voice

  • "Which student suggests...?" β†’ Listen for who makes the suggestion

  • "What do they agree on?" β†’ Listen for both speakers saying yes
  • Common Multi-Speaker Mistakes

    Practice Technique

    Daily exercise (10 minutes):

  • Play any English conversation (podcast, YouTube)

  • Pause after each speaker change

  • Write down what each speaker said (keywords only)

  • Check: Did you track each speaker correctly?
  • After 1-2 weeks of this exercise, tracking multiple speakers becomes natural.
