IELTS Writing Task 2: Linking Words That Boost

Why Linking Words Matter

Linking words (also called connectors or cohesive devices) are essential for IELTS Writing. They connect your ideas, show relationships between sentences, and make your writing flow naturally.

The examiner specifically looks for "a variety of cohesive devices" in the band descriptors. Using linking words well can push you from Band 6 to Band 7.

How Many to Use

Aim for 1-2 linking words per paragraph. That's 4-8 total per essay. This shows variety without overdoing it.

Practice

Write a paragraph without any linking words. Then rewrite it with linking words. Notice how much smoother it reads. Do this daily for 2 weeks.

Practice on Our Portal

Our Grammar Portal at grammar.bharatdn.com has linking word exercises specifically for IELTS Writing. Practice daily for best results.
